Bio
Paul Bernhardt • Photographer and Writer
Paul Bernhardt is a British freelance photographer and writer based in Lisbon, Portugal.
He began his career as a press photographer in England, working for a quality daily newspaper covering hard news, sport and features. After relocating to Portugal he began to focus more on travel-related topics, winning commissions from international travel guide publishing houses including Dorling Kindersley and Lonely Planet.
A dedicated and self-motivated individual with the ability to produce accurate and engaging copy for print and online media – with good judgement in tailoring website content accordingly – Paul also possesses strong editing and fact-checking skills and can demonstrate the high levels of commitment required to meet the strictest of deadlines.
He is the sole author and co-photographer of Dorling Kindersley’s best-selling Eyewitness Travel guidebooks Top 10 Azores and Top 10 Algarve—both included as category winners in the Top Guidebook Series in the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2017. He has also contributed copy for Top 10 Madeira.
In addition, Paul was principal photographer for the 1st edition of Lonely Planet’s Pocket Lisbon guidebook, and photographed the 1st edition of Time Out’s Lisbon City guidebook.
An accomplished photographer, his work has been published in Traveller magazine (see Blog), The Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times and Sun newspapers, A Place in the Sun magazine, Travel Africa magazine and TNT magazine, among other UK publications. Other clients include bthere!, Brussels Airlines’ inflight magazine, and Condé Nast Traveler magazine (USA).
As a photojournalist, Paul has worked with Walk magazine, the in-house UK publication for The Ramblers, Britain's walking charity.
For several years, Paul was the Lisbon contributor for 10best.com, a division of USA Today Travel. His entries still serve as useful reference for those visiting the Portuguese capital.
He is currently a member of the content management team for Lisbon-based digital media company New Adventures delivering engaging text and image galleries to a global audience.
